A new study assessed
the impact of an early childhood development (ECD) intervention called Sit Down
and Play (SDP) on parent and child outcomes during routine healthcare visits.
Here, caregivers with infants aged 5-6 months were randomly assigned to the intervention (SDP) group or control group. The intervention involved SDP sessions during recruitment and two subsequent immunization visits. ECD outcomes were evaluated at 12 months using parenting behavior assessments and the Developmental Assessment Scale for Indian Infants (DASII).
It was noted that
the intervention group exhibited significant improvements in parent-child
stimulation activities and verbal interactions compared to the control group.
Additionally, infants in the intervention group achieved significantly higher
DASII scores.
Hence, this brief healthcare intervention can enhance early learning opportunities for caregivers and positively influence neurodevelopmental outcomes in infants. Future research should explore the underlying mechanisms and factors affecting ECD outcomes, as well as assess the program's generalizability to different population groups.
