Ovarian cysts are frequently found incidentally during pregnancy and can pose significant diagnostic and management due to potential risks to both the mother and fetus. The present case series examined the management approaches and outcomes for ovarian cysts identified during pregnancy, involving five cases with a mean maternal age of 25 years, mainly detected in the second trimester.
Majority of the cysts were classified as simple or functional, and diagnostic ultrasounds were primarily used for evaluation. Management approaches varied from expectant management to surgical procedures, depending on factors such as cyst size, symptoms, and growth. Maternal complications were infrequent, with one instance of ovarian torsion, while three out of five cases had positive fetal outcomes.
This series underscores the need for personalized management strategies for ovarian cysts during pregnancy, indicating that conservative approaches are generally safe and effective. Continuous monitoring through serial imaging is essential for monitoring cyst development and guide clinical decision-making. Further prospective studies are needed to create evidence-based guidelines for managing ovarian cysts in pregnant patients.
