Colloidal Nano silver gel for treating bacterial vaginosis, vulvovaginal candidiasis, and trichomoniasis

A recent study examined the efficacy and safety of colloidal nanosilver gel, when combined with 0.2% lactic acid, in treating bacterial vaginosis, vulvovaginal candidiasis, and trichomoniasis among female subjects.

The research enrolled post-menarchal females aged between 18 and 65 years who were clinically diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis and vulvovaginal candidiasis. Participants were randomized to receive either colloidal nanosilver gel combined with 0.2% lactic acid (intervention) or a placebo (vehicle) gel. Both treatments involved a single 4 gm application inserted into the vagina using an applicator device, administered once daily at bedtime for internal use. Additionally, 2 gm of gel was applied locally to the vulva and vagina twice daily for external use for 14 days.

The study observed-

  •  The enrollment of 38 women in the colloidal nanosilver gel and 0.2% lactic acid group and 19 subjects in the placebo group.
  • The intervention group had improved cure rates of vaginal infections compared to placebo.
  • The intervention group had a higher (86.84%) proportion of subjects achieving clinical cure of vaginal infections than the Placebo gel arm(41.18%).
  • The interventional group had a clinical cure rate of 81.82% for bacterial vaginosis and 92.59% for vulvovaginal candidiasis at the end of the study.
  • The interventional group had a significantly higher microbial cure of vaginal infections compared to placebo, indicated as 100% for bacterial vaginosis and 85.19% for vulvovaginal candidiasis.
  • The intervention group reported no adverse events.

This study proves that colloidal nanosilver gel, in combination with 0.2% lactic acid, is an effective and safe way of treating bacterial vaginosis and vulvovaginal candidiasis.
