India witnessed a surge in the average daily Covid cases from 571 in the week ending on March 17th to 4,188 in the week ending on April 7th.
Bureaucrats expressed that although COVID cases are rising, the XBB.1.16 variant isn't inducing severe illnesses, and hospitalization remains low.
Amid the recent XBB.1.16 surge, the officials said that the new COVID cases would keep rising for the next 10-12 days but would start declining soon after that. They also said that Covid is moving towards the endemic stage in India.
Meanwhile, World Health Organisation (WHO) also showed concerns regarding the case surge, citing XBB.1.16 as a 'variant to watch out for'.
