Effectiveness of Vibration and Cold in Reducing Pain During Vaccine Injections in Infants

This study investigated the impact of using vibration and external cold on pain experienced by six-month-old infants during vaccine injections. It was designed as a randomized controlled trial involving 80 infants selected from a health center based on specific inclusion criteria. The infants were divided into a control group and an intervention group through block randomization. In the intervention group, a device that provided vibration and cold was applied to the injection site one minute before and 15 seconds after administering the pentavalent vaccine, while the control group received the vaccine without any additional treatment. Pain levels were assessed using the Modified Behavioral Pain Scale (MBPS) 15 seconds post-injection, and the duration of crying was recorded from the time of injection until the end of crying.

The results indicated that:

  • Both groups had a similar gender distribution (55% girls).
  • However, the intervention group reported significantly lower mean pain intensity (6.1 ± 1.8) and crying duration (32.47 ± 16.78) compared to the control group (7.2 ± 0.1 and 51.02 ± 25.9, respectively).

The study concluded that the combination of vibration and cold effectively reduced pain intensity and crying duration, suggesting that healthcare providers should consider these simple pain relief methods in vaccination settings.
