Evaluation of the Modified Martin Procedure for Megacystis Microcolon Intestinal Hypoperistalsis Syndrome

The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of the modified Martin procedure in treating patients with megacystismicrocolon intestinal hypoperistalsis syndrome (MMIHS). The researchers conducted a retrospective review of medical records for patients diagnosed with MMIHS who underwent surgical intervention at their institution from August 2019 to June 2023. Both the modified Martin procedure and the Bishop–Koop procedure were performed. They collected data on patient demographics, surgical duration, intraoperative blood loss, complications, and clinical outcomes.

The results demonstrated:

  • The study included 11 children diagnosed with MMIHS, with a mean age of 4.08 years, of which 63.64% were male.
  • The average duration of surgery was 312.09 minutes, with an average blood loss of 25.82 ml.
  • The first bowel movement post-surgery occurred after an average of 3.60 days, and patients resumed eating after about 4.10 days, with an average hospital stay of 24.64 days.
  • Among the nine children who survived, two required intermittent intravenous nutrition, while seven successfully transitioned from parenteral nutrition.
  • Unfortunately, two patients died due to multiple organ failure.

To summarize, the modified Martin procedure shows promise as a treatment for MMIHS, with patients demonstrating improved nutritional status and favorable outcomes during follow-up.
