Health-Related Consequences of Early Menarche in Indian Women

Adolescence is marked by significant physical and psychological changes. Early menarche, occurring before the age of 11 years, is a notable health concern that remains unaddressed.

A review article sought to explore the health implications of early menarche and highlight the need for a multidisciplinary approach to address the complex factors influencing it.

The authors consented that early menarche is linked to higher risks of metabolic disorders, cardiovascular disease, mental health issues, and reproductive health challenges, which can profoundly impact the emotional and physical well-being of adolescent girls. Therefore, it is a public health issue that requires attention. Recognizing the potential risks associated with early puberty and menstrual issues is essential for developing strategies to promote optimal health outcomes for adolescent girls and women.

Of note, early menarche is a pressing concern among Indian women that demands immediate attention. Research on the prevalence of conditions like depression, anxiety, PCOS, and sleep problems in women with early menarche is scarce. Nonetheless, some studies, especially from South India, indicate an increased awareness of early menarche as a factor in eating disorders, dysmenorrhea, and other health issues. More research is crucial to understand and mitigate the negative consequences of early menarche – to promote strategies for improving women's overall health and well-being.

By expanding research efforts, we can better grasp the prevalence and impact of early menarche and take measures to address this issue. This review offers a detailed analysis of the subject, highlighting potential risks and challenges of early puberty while emphasizing timely interventions and support.
