Impact of Almond Consumption on Lipid Profiles in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

A meta-analysis conducted by Wang et al was conducted to evaluate the impact of almond consumption on lipid profiles in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). A search of four electronic databases up to January 2020 identified five eligible studies for quantitative analysis. The results indicated the following findings:

  • No significant beneficial effects of almond intake were observed on total cholesterol weighted mean difference (WMD: 0.65 mg/dL), triglycerides (WMD: 1.59 mg/dL), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (; WMD: -5.40 mg/dL), or high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (WMD: 1.57 mg/dL).
  • However, subgroup analyses revealed that LDL-C levels significantly decreased in studies where participants consumed more than 50 grams of almonds daily.

In conclusion, while almond consumption did not generally improve lipid profiles in T2DM patients, higher intake may lead to a reduction in LDL-C levels.
