Obesity is a significant public health concern,
resembling an epidemic due to its prevalence across various demographic groups without
discrimination based on age, gender, or socioeconomic status. The incidence of
obesity among pregnant women is increasing, leading to numerous complications
faced by obstetricians today. This condition poses substantial challenges for
pregnant women, as it is associated with adverse perinatal and maternal
outcomes. However, studies have yielded conflicting results regarding the
impact of lifestyle interventions on pregnancy outcomes.
The primary objective of a recent review was to
highlight the complications, clinical importance, and management of maternal
obesity.
Pregnant women with obesity often experience
unfavorable maternal and fetal complications and outcomes. Therefore, it is
essential to guide pregnant women during their antenatal visits, encouraging
them to maintain a healthy weight, engage in recommended physical activities,
and follow appropriate dietary guidelines.
Screening and early management of obesity in
pregnant women are necessary to enhance both maternal and fetal outcomes. A multidisciplinary
team comprising endocrinologists, dietitians, physicians, and gynecologists can
play a crucial role in this process.
It is essential that women achieve a pre-conception healthy weight and implement dietary and lifestyle changes throughout pregnancy––to ensure their well-being, as well as that of the offspring.
