A new
study assessed whether the modified Berger-Allen exercises are efficacious in reducing
lower limb swelling in late pregnancy.
This
randomized clinical trial involved 105 pregnant women experiencing lower limb
edema. The participants were randomly assigned to three groups – one performing
modified Buerger-Allen exercises for five days, another for ten days, and a
control group. Foot circumferences, volume, and pain measurements were taken
before and after the study.
The
results indicated a significant reduction in ankle circumferences, heel
circumferences, foot circumferences, foot volume, and pain scores in both, the
5-day and 10-day intervention groups after the respective exercise
periods.
From the findings, it was inferred that implementing the innovative, modified Buerger-Allen exercises in pregnant women experiencing lower limb edema conferred notable reductions in pain and swelling. These exercises could decrease pedal edema and the associated pain in late pregnancy among women with lower limb edema.
