Postpartum Lifestyle and Weight Retention Challenges among Indian women

Postpartum is a challenging phase of life, marked by transformations both within and outside the body. Kumari A et al. emphasized this phase's frequently neglected aspect in their recent study, investigating lifestyle-related factors and their impact on postpartum weight retention. The study, employing a telephonic interview schedule, assessed the diet, physical activity, sleep, and prevailing myths and barriers, that could reshape postpartum women's approach to healthy living.

The study encompassed a cohort of 505 postpartum women and found a median postpartum weight retention of 5 kg. They noticed that more than half of the participants engaged in incorrect dietary habits. Furthermore, the study highlighted that less than one-tenth of women indulged in low/moderate-intensity physical activity. Women also had poorer diet and sleep in the initial postpartum phase than in late postpartum and were also less physically active in the initial months, which improved as the postpartum period progressed. Kumari A et al. found that the socio-demographic variables (socioeconomic status, education, and employment status) were significantly associated with unhealthy lifestyle practices, with common barriers being lack of knowledge, time constraints, lack of childcare support, and cultural myths and beliefs.

This study provides a basis for a weight management program designed for women, which could significantly change postpartum health. Holistic postpartum care is not just a medical necessity but a social imperative. Policymakers, healthcare providers, and society must help women engage in healthy living, redefining postpartum health for generations to come.
