A recent study evaluated the incidence and kinds of primary immunodeficiency diseases (PIDs) in hospitalized children (upto 12years). It screened the children for suspected IPD using Jeffrey Modell Foundation (JMF) Criteria; and further evaluated them if they satisfied at least 2 out of 10 warning signs.
The study found that-
• Of the 33,204 hospital admissions, 50 children satisfied the JMF criteria.Â
• Of these 50 children, 27 were finally diagnosed with an underlying PID.
• The prevalence was calculated as 1 in 1000 hospitalized children.Â
• 37.03% of them had antibody deficiency, and 33.3% had a phagocytic defect.Â
• The commonest PID was Chronic granulomatous disease, followed by common variable immunodeficiency.Â
• 62.97% of children had respiratory infections, and Acinetobacterbaumannii was the commonest isolated organism.Â
This study presents the prevalence of PIDs in eastern India. Implementing a systematic, step-by-step clinical and diagnostic approach can help early identification and prompt therapeutic interventions. Such approaches are crucial in improving patient outcomes and enhancing overall management strategies for primary immunodeficiency diseases.
