Real-world utilization pattern of dydrogesteronein India

Despite the existing literature on dydrogesterone, there is a significant gap in studies focusing on its utilization patterns among Indian patients.

This multicenter, retrospective, observational, cross-sectional, and descriptive study was conducted across 817 centers in India. Data from patients who had previously received dydrogesterone and consented to the future use of their medical records for research were retrieved and analyzed.

The study analyzed data from 7,287 subjects with an average age of 29.55±4.84 years. The most common reason for prescribing dydrogesterone was threatened abortion (46.9%), followed by recurrent pregnancy loss. The most frequent comorbid conditions were polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, and anemia. The most common risk factors observed were prior pregnancy loss, advanced maternal age, and obesity. A total of 27.5% of the subjects received a loading dose of dydrogesterone, with 64% of these receiving a 40 mg dose. For maintenance or regular dosing, 81.4% of subjects used a 10 mg dose, mostly administered twice daily (BID) (in 66.6% of the cases). The most frequent concomitant medications included folic acid, iron supplements, calcium, and vitamin D3 supplements. Further, 7.8% of subjects concurrently used another form of progesterone (oral, injection, vaginal, tubal), alongside dydrogesterone.

The findings identified the patient population benefiting from dydrogesterone – detailing the common clinical indications, risk factors, comorbid conditions, and concomitant medications in a real-life setting. It provided a clearer understanding of how dydrogesterone is utilized among Indian women––highlighting the prevalent clinical scenarios and treatment patterns.
