Traditional Remedies And Supporting Practices For Diaper Dermatitis

Traditional knowledge plays a key role in child-rearing – often influencing practices for conditions like breastfeeding, diaper rash, diarrhea, and jaundice. A recent study aimed to examine traditional methods used to treat diaper dermatitis in children.

This research was undertaken between June and August 2023, and included 81 children with diaper dermatitis. Data were gathered using a personal information form and the Assessing the Severity of Uncomplicated Diaper Dermatitis in Infants Scale.

The average age of the children enrolled was 16.12±0.97 months – with a scale score of 2.55±0.14, indicating a moderate level of severity. The results showed that about half of the mothers had received training on managing diaper dermatitis. The most used modern method was zinc oxide barrier cream (38.3%), while olive oil (35.8%) was the most frequent traditional remedy.

Hence, it was inferred that mothers generally chose methods that were safe for the child’s skin, whether traditional or modern. Traditional practices--such as the use of olive oil--which do not harm health, remain prevalent. While the children's dermatitis scores were moderate, it was noted that girls had higher scores than boys.

The results highlighted the importance of educating mothers and healthcare professionals about traditional methods and supporting safe and beneficial practices for child care. It was concluded that promoting safe conventional methods alongside modern treatments can be helpful in managing diaper dermatitis.
